Here kitty, kitty…a frightening painting unless you are Cat People.
If you are Turner Classic Movie fan you’ll recognize the 1942 movie Cat People as a weird, other worldly Horror Film. In the 80’s remake the movie Cat People with Nastassja Kinski takes on a more sensuous feel with her trying so desperately to remain human and not transform into a black panther and consume her lover. Although this is not the plot for the painting you may find that it stirs up your own uneasiness and mysteriousness that sets the stage for you to explore the work and experience your own interpretation.

The painting on close examination is very revealing, besides the many obvious green eyes and the intense scratching, you will discover the night ward path that moves diagonally through the work. In the upper left you will discover the panther’s lair or cave. The painting has a multi-dimensional mystical feel when viewed in person. The claw marks reveal many textures and subtle colors. Some playful, others more menacing.

If you are a devotee of poetry then you may be familiar with Ranier Maria Rilke’s Der Panther (The Panther) poem. Inspiration for the poem came from a captured panther that he viewed behind bars as it was exhibited at the Menagerie of the Jardin de Plantes in Paris. Here is an excerpt from the poem, “ Only at times, the curtain of the pupils lifts, quietly…. And images enters in, rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles, plunges into the heart and is gone.” For a better viewing of this painting I invite you to go to my website to see it enlarged at Rod Jones Artist.com…Not quite like viewing in person, but it still projects an emotional view of the painting. The feel is of the essence of the panther’s life, one of gravity, respect and somewhat frightening over-tones.

Why Do I Use the Tipping Hat as My Profile Pic?Â
The #1 reason it has always reminded me of graciousness and respect. Growing up as I did, I had the opportunity to see many Film Noir movies, along with great American Westerns. As a young boy, like the song goes, my heros have always been Cowboys. Especially the ones that ended up with the beautiful girl at the end of the movie. The properness of a gentleman tipping his hat to a lady or raising his hat in the acknowledgment of another man to me exemplifies class and mutual respect. I chose the more contemporary fedora to tip to all my visitors, viewers and those that know me as an artist.

On a historical note, the fedora goes back to 1891, the name fedora is derived from the Greek work “Theodoros” which literally means “Gift of God”. In the 1950’s you had “Old Blue Eyes”- Frank Sinatra, arguably a class act by anyone’s standard wore a stylish fedora that just seemed to work. It also became the quintessential part of Dallas Cowboys Tom Landry’s trademark image. In addition the Cowboys wore a patch on their uniform during the 2000 season depicting Landry’s Fedora.

Maybe it’s no coincidence that Indiana Jones - no relation - wore a Fedora backed up by a whip. Macho-ness with a manly vulnerability…another class act.

Here’s my cause… #hattip2u with respect to all I meet…maybe we can just all get along if we would show more respect to each other and especially to the fairer sex.

SW 1800’s
Size (h w d):36 x 48 x 1.5 in
Medium:Oil on Canvas
Description:I have spent a good portion of my life traveling around and visiting many towns and national monuments throughout the Southwest. From Mesa Verde to Nogales, from Tombstone to Zion, I have always felt a kinship with the great openness of the deserts of the Southwest. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a favorite. And of course the ultimate movie set for all the great Ford/John Wayne Westerns…Monument Valley. I would be cheating the Navajo Nations if I didn’t mention Window Rock, AZ and the Southwest’s definitive radio station KTNN 660 AM - Window Rock. A true story…I actually saw a girl in a flatbed Ford in Winslow, AZ. But unfortunately she did not slow down and take a look at me. So why this painting is named SW 1800’s ? I have watched much of the quaintness of the Southwest disappear. One can only imagine how it looked through the 1800’s with real cowboys on horseback. The painting also gives homage to the Native Americans who thrived in these territories. There is also a sentimental reason I have for the great Southwest. I courted my wife through much of the territory, traveling in our van and/or Jeep with our Levi’s, black t-shirts, bandanas and very fashionable chrome mirrored sunglasses. When we head over to Arizona these days or Santa Fe, New Mexico it’s like a refresher course in true love. Precious memories with my muse, wife and spiritual lover.

Size (h w d):36 x 36 x 1.5 in
Medium:Oil on Canvas
Description:A non-saccharine approach to spring - View of Spring allows the viewer a snippet of spring, almost as if looking through a chaotic juxtapositioned window surrounded by a surreal, vibrant and boisterous interior wallpaper, leading to an outside scene of a serene and peaceful view. Outside the window the viewer has a glimpse of new growth and the possibility of a budding flower that has not yet appeared. Perhaps this is a metaphor for how life truly is, sometimes you can’t see the fruition of your wants, but you can see a bud or a small stem of growth… but know the flower is soon to appear.

Crown of Thorns

Description:Certainly billions of Christians around the world observe Holy Week in preparation for the Easter vigil. This painting brings to mind the symbolism of the Crown of Thorns and the squares of red is a poignant reminder of the blood that was shed by the Redeemer. I have to admit the painting was never intended to exemplify the suffering of Jesus and the impact it would have on humanity and man’s faith in God. It started out as my idea to use two colors from a pack of Beeman’s gum…the black and the blue. I created the radius and the thornlike structure purely by accident. As I drew the shape my only thought was the composition and how it affected the overall space. Once I added the blue and stood back and looked at the painting, I immediately thought of a Crown of Thorns. Ironically enough, when my family came into the studio, they said it looks like a Crown of Thorns. To complete the composition and continue the theme, I added the three red squares, symbolising the blood of Christ and perhaps the Blessed Trinity. I doubt that I will ever offer this painting for sale. The more I view this work, the more I realize that often we artists are inspired to create and paint things we don’t necessarily understand or even realize what the canvas will reveal. For me, this was just the case. All of a sudden the painting told its own story. I was the channel. This is why I often say, “ Who guides my brush it be not me.” #rodjonesartist #receptiveabstractpatternism #easter #holyweek #christians #crownofthorns #jesus #christ #blessedtrinity #eastervigil #bloodofchrist https://ift.tt/2pPL9er

Imaginary Bliss

Medium:Oil On Canvas
Size:36”x48”x1.5
Description:
Can you express 5 things in your life that created total bliss? That in itself can be a joyful experience, even if you find your bliss in the imaginary world. This painting for some has become a dwelling place to lose yourself into the joy it reveals. Although temporary like most of our lives encounters, Valhalla lives within our spirit. I invite the viewer of this work to seek happiness for a minute, an hour, a day, a year, or lifetime. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Seek your joy in the world of positive creativity. The rewards are many for those who enter into a state of blissfulness.

To motivate yourself and others…Share your bliss, it’s contagious. #rodjonesartist #receptiveabstractpatternism #hattip2u #kunst #curator #artcollector #artadvisor #joyful #bliss http://ift.tt/2ICS7Mp

My creative identity comes from my history.
Grew up in a small mountain community Crestline, CA, spent my summers on my grandparents farm in Colorado, after HS joined the Navy a became a Submarine Sonar Technician. After the Navy opened my own Commercial Photography Studio in San Diego and Los Angeles. After 20 years of being a photographer I became a Marketing Consultant. At that point I started to paint, which was always a part of my life since youth. Now I create with a paint brush.

The theory of narrative identity postulates that individuals form an identity by integrating their life experiences into an internalize, evolving story of the self that provides the individual with a sense of unity and purpose in life.

Be creative and enjoy your life.

Light of the Silvery Moon

Size (h w d):36 x 48 x 1.5 in
Medium:Oil on Canvas

Description:On a late evening, not so long ago, I was looking out my studio window at the surrounding forest. It was a moon-bright evening, which changed the typical greenery of the pine trees into silver. There was enough moisture in the air that enhanced it even more. The moon reflecting off of some of the trees and yet it still revealed the deep dark recesses, spreading the uneven tonal value all around. I was just completing this painting and it needed a name. For some unknown reason By the Light of the Silvery Moon song popped into my head. So there you have it. A painting with blue grey and contrasting deep greys and indigo.
Like most artists, beyond the actual creation, we all love to name our works. I for one never think about a name until after the work is completed. And sometimes a piece of art may sit around the studio, for quite some time, begging to be named, wanting attention like a child seeking the spotlight. #rodjonesartist #receptiveabstractpatternism #artcurator #contemporaryartcurator #moon #moonlight #forest #moonbright #bythelightofthesilverymoon #dorisday http://ift.tt/2I8bI7a

Jardin des Tuileries
Size (h w d):40 x 30 x 0.75 in
Medium:oil on canvas
Description:The painting owes its name to the Jardin des Tuileries Garden. It is a public garden located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Magnificent history, architecture and nature combined with playgrounds, carousel and a toy boat pond to entertain the children and adults promoting a relaxing beautiful environment that eases the senses and allows people to be present in the moment with a “slow down” atmosphere. Beautiful in all seasons, even in the cold of winter. The gardens let you experience the seasons while relaxing and taking in the beauty of Mother Nature.
This painting has a Impressionist feel albeit abstract one.
Oblique and non-oblique in form which enlightens senses. The lavender, yellow, red, green all exemplify flowers in bloom. The gardens must have been a favorite plein aire location. After a day of painting, if it were me, I would picnic with baguette, fromage and a wonderful bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. Cheers to my fellow artists of France. #rodjonesartist #receptiveabstractpatternism #jardindestuileries #paris #placedelaconcorde #pleinair #picnic #champagne #france #hattip2u #artcollector http://ift.tt/2oyMAgU

Unwitting Wildwood
Size (h w d):36 x 36 x 1.5 in
Medium:Oil On Canvas
Description:People who research such things, I believe they are called Dendrologist, tell us that trees communicate with each other. Interestingly enough if a tree in the forest becomes sickly other trees will feed it nutrients through its root structure. In fact they’ll even share water. This painting, although visually complicated, could never compete with the billions of miracles that profoundly occur in nature. But if you take the time to explore the depth of this work, you will discover there are passages within passages, being held together by subtle textured colors unwittingly creating a harmony of a wildwood forest. #rodjonesartist #receptiveabstractpatternism #curator #artcurator #contemporaryartcurator #hattip2u #nature #forest #wildwood http://ift.tt/2ETDO7d
